NEW Federal Minimum Wage
The federal minimum wage will increase on July 24 to $7.25 per hour. Since Pennsylvania’s minimum wage is currently $7.15, the state’s minimum wage will increase to the federal rate effective on the same date as the federal increase.
Efforts to raise the federal minimum wage took many twists and turns before the bill was enacted. President Bush signed the minimum wage increase into law on May 25, 2007. This first step raised the minimum wage from $5.15 (where it had been frozen since 1997) to $5.85. The second step raised the minimum wage to $6.55 on July 24, 2008; and the final step will raise the minimum wage to $7.25 effective July 24, 2009.
If you have questions about the federal or state increases, please contact Roberta Mayer, Payroll Supervisor at 717.569.7081.
